Our Favorite Local Spots to Grab Some Sun and Sand

One of the best parts about summer in Portland is how easy it is to spend a day on the water. Whether you're looking to cool off after work, pack a picnic with friends, paddle the river, or let your dog splash around, there are plenty of great spots just a short drive away.

Like any local, we've spent our fair share of sunny afternoons exploring different beaches, parks, and water spots around the city. Every spot has its own vibe — some are perfect for lounging with a book, others are better for paddleboarding or swimming, and some are just great places to hang out and enjoy a warm evening.

Here are four of our favorite places to soak up the sun this summer.

Sellwood Riverfront Park

If we had to recommend one spot to someone new to Portland, Sellwood Riverfront Park would be high on the list. It's one of those places that offers tons of classic water activities and spots to relax, making it a favorite for many people (and pups!).

Overall Vibe: Relaxed, lively, and quintessential Portland summer. You'll find plenty of people picnicking, reading, paddleboarding, swimming, or simply enjoying the river.

Best For: Swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, picnics, and spending the afternoon with friends or family.

Parking & Accessibility: There is a parking lot near the park, along with neighborhood street parking. Walking paths are relatively flat and easy to navigate, making river access easy.

Dogs: Yes! Dogs are welcome, and there's even an off-leash area nearby, making this one of the best options if you're bringing your pup along.

Know Before You Go: This park is extremely popular on warm weekends, so arriving earlier in the day usually means easier parking and more room to spread out.

Eastbank Esplanade

The Eastbank Esplanade offers a completely different experience than Portland's neighborhood beaches. Instead of enjoying nature outside of the city, you're right in the heart of it.

Overall Vibe: Energetic, scenic, and distinctly Portland. Great for people who enjoy being close to the action while still getting out on the water.

Best For: Swimming from the docks, kayaking, paddleboarding, walking, biking, or combining a river day with food and drinks nearby.

Parking & Accessibility: Street parking is available throughout the Central Eastside, and the Esplanade is easily accessible by bike, MAX, or on foot.

Dogs: Yes, dogs are welcome on leash while exploring the paths and waterfront.

Know Before You Go: Because this is an active urban waterfront, expect plenty of cyclists, runners, and pedestrians. The river can also be busy with boat traffic, so always pay attention when swimming or paddling.

Milwaukie Bay Park

Just a few miles south of Portland, Milwaukie Bay Park feels like a quieter alternative to some of the city's busier swimming spots. It's a great option if you're looking for a slower pace while still having easy river access.

Overall Vibe: Peaceful, laid-back, and family-friendly.

Best For: Swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, relaxing by the water, or enjoying a quieter afternoon outside. Bonus: if you have a boat, there’s a launch spot here.

Parking & Accessibility: Free parking is available nearby, and the walk from the parking area to the waterfront is short and accessible for most visitors.

Dogs: Yes! Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park.

Know Before You Go: This spot tends to be less crowded than many Portland beaches, making it a great choice if you're hoping for a little more space to unwind.

Kelly Point Park

Kelly Point Park feels a bit more tucked away than many of Portland's better-known swimming spots. The combination of wooded trails, open river access, and gorgeous water views makes it feel more like a nature escape than a city park.

Overall Vibe: Natural, peaceful, and adventurous.

Best For: Swimming, exploring trails, picnics, bird watching, and spending a full day outdoors.

Parking & Accessibility: A parking lot is available near the entrance, followed by a short walk to the waterfront. Some areas include uneven natural terrain, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Dogs: Yes, leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park.

Know Before You Go: River currents can be stronger here than at some other locations. Be mindful of water conditions and always swim where it's safe to do so.

Final Thoughts

One of the things we love most about living in Portland is that you don't have to travel far to find a great summer adventure. Whether you're spending the afternoon floating the river, reading under a tree, throwing a ball for your dog, or catching up with friends by the water, there's a spot that fits just about every kind of summer day.

As always, remember to recreate responsibly. Pack out what you pack in, respect other visitors, keep an eye on changing river conditions, and help keep these places beautiful for everyone.

If you check out one of these spots this summer, or have another favorite we should add to our list, we'd love to hear about it. Happy swimming!
